MY FAVORITE....books, podcasts, products, shoes....foods, coffee....music......anything! In no particular order:
1. BAD FEMINIST
I have raved about this book for a year now. I recently reread it on a flight (and left it on the plane!! I hope someone picks it up) and found that it was SO fitting for this time in America. Bad Feminist is a compilation of essays by Roxane Gay: essays about privilege, rape culture, reproductive freedom, gay rights, etc. It's an easy read. Roxane speaks about feminism in a unique and relatable way and I love that she doesn't attack readers.
Do you call yourself a feminist? Do you ever catch yourself thinking or acting in a way that contradicts yourself? I'm sure we've all been there. This book inspired me to be more conscious and just DO BETTER. The media we consume and our experiences shape us. It's important to do our best to immerse ourselves in other cultures, whether this be through books or travel. We must learn to have empathy.
A great thing about Bad Feminist is that you can skip around! Here are my favorite essays:
The Careless Language of Sexual Violence
What We Hunger For
Some Jokes are Funnier Than Others
Blurred Lines, Indeed
2. SUSTAINABLE FASHION
I can't tell you how long it's been since I purchased a piece of clothing that wasn't secondhand. It feels great to shop sustainably. If you're confused, I recommend watching the documentary, The True Cost (on netflix) or reading this article. In the style section, I have a post dedicated to vintage clothing! Check it out here.
I'm excited to announce that I recently became a Goodwill Ambassador! I have a video and blog post coming soon in collaboration with the organization.
I've also been loving selling on depop to pass my clothing along to someone new. You can follow me on the app to see what's in my shop: @kaileemckenzie.
3. TINTED MOISTURIZER
I'm so late on this. I'd never found a tinted moisturizer I REALLY loved until recently. Months ago, I accidentally purchased the Tarte Amazonian Clay Tinted Moisturizer instead of the foundation. I was pretty annoyed with myself, but I never returned it. I used it a few weeks ago on a whim and I fell in love. It's so lightweight and gives me nearly the same amount of coverage as the foundation.
Living in NYC, I walk upwards of 4-6 miles a day. I simply can't be bothered by uncomfortable shoes. I'm always in my AF1's or 1970s Converse. Here's a video I did styling the Air Force 1.
I practically survive off NYC bagels. I've become a BAGEL SNOB! Here are my favorite places to get bagels in the city:
Brooklyn Bagels- bless the place that doesn't have a card mininum!! The workers know my order and sometimes let me skip the line. I usually go to the 8th Ave location because it's right by my school.
Bagels and More- I'm now an upper east side lady, and therefore I had to find a new bagel spot. This is quite small in comparison to Brooklyn Bagels, but the workers are more friendly. $10 card minimum :/
Tompkins Square Bagels- I really have something against cash-only places, but these bagels are good (and expensive). Nice if you wanna explore the east village after breakfast.
I'll be releasing a monthly playlist soon, but here are some songs to get you in a cozy mood.
I Love You So- The Walters
Hold The Line- Jack and Eliza
Avant Gardener- Courtney Barnett
7. HOW I BUILT THIS
NPR's How I Built This podcast series- an inspiring way to get insight from the creators of Instagram, Airbnb, Vice, etc. I started listening to podcasts on my commute instead of music. It sort of makes me feel like I'm being productive.
8. AVE5080 BOOK
My boyfriend, Avery, published a photography book and there are only a few left on his website! Lots of images similar to my Summer in the City on Film and Back to School Photos posts :)
